Education Committee

The education committee led by Chair-person Ella Davis has been actively engaging the South DeKalb Community for the past two years.  Late in 2014, after reviewing the standardized test of all of the elementary schools in the South DeKalb area, the committee made the decision to adopt Ronald E. McNair Learning Academy which is housed on 2nd Avenue.

During 2015, with the collaboration of the school Principal, Dr. Bolden, the education committee worked to provide volunteers to assist with the Summer Bridge Program (a program sponsored by the school that provided assistance for teachers for students in grades pre-K through rising 5th graders).

At the beginning of the 2015 – 2016 school year, the committee worked to provide volunteers to assist teachers in the classroom, during regular instructional time.  Volunteers worked with teachers to provide one-on-one support for students whose reading skills are below grade level.

As a result of the work at Ronald E. McNair Learning Academy, the committee was able to acquire a $10,000.00 grant from United Way of Greater Atlanta to further assist in its efforts to support the school.  The grant was used during calendar year 2016 for specific events in the McNair cluster which also includes Ronald E. McNair Middle and High Schools.

Each year our goals increase. In December 2016, we received another grant from United Way of Greater Atlanta in the amount of $14,000.00. Our plans are to provide the same services at another South DeKalb Elementary School that we currently provide at McNair DLA. We are also planning to provide a book for every child at McNair DLA and books for another school’s pre-K through third grade in March.  We will continue to partner with other organizations to provide services to parents and student in the area in an effort to improve the lives of families in the South DeKalb area.
